Should hoteliers allow group bookings via OTAs? Yes or No?

The OTAs have been trying to enter the leisure group booking market for decades now. Lately, more and more hoteliers are receiving group bookings from the OTAs that are disguised as individual reservations under the same guest’s name and with the typical OTA 24h cancellation policy. The question is should hoteliers allow OTA customers to “trick the system” or should demand that the OTAs disallow multiple reservations for the same stay period by the same customer?

Expedia reports 96% of travellers want to do nothing on their next vacation

New research from Expedia reveals the over-scheduled holiday season has prompted many Americans to plan a “nothing-cation,” a trip where warm weather and relaxation are the main attractions. Expedia internal data confirms January is one of the top months for researching and booking beach vacations, which is a favourite trip type for nothing-cationers. On average, about a quarter of getaways planned during the first month of the year is to beach destinations, and many hotspots including Cancun, Riviera Maya, Punta Cana and Oahu are already seeing double-digit increases in demand compared to the same time in 2019.

Top Tech & Travel Trends that will shape the tourism industry in 2023

2022 was something of a rollercoaster for the hotel industry. While travel demand surged from its pandemic lows, hoteliers faced new challenges such as persistent labour shortages, and new ways of interacting with technology and their guests. According to a survey by Bankrate, rising prices caused 79% of U.S. travellers to alter their travel plans during the 2022 holiday season, with many travellers opting to travel fewer days, enjoy less expensive activities and cheaper accommodations, or travel shorter distances.

Metaverse: Shaping the future of the tourism industry

Definitions of the metaverse differ, but a commonly held view is that a true metaverse – one that’s perhaps decentralized, ungoverned, universal and in which anyone can interact with anyone – is probably still years away. Hotel company Leven purchased its first property in the metaverse using virtual currency and unveiled it last year. Designed by an architect, the virtual hotel is “rich and organic. It doesn’t have any hard edges. It’s a very curved, almost seductive building” that incorporates nature and botanicals into its design, according to Griffin.

Lemon Tree Hotels announced its latest signing, Keys Lite by Lemon Tree Hotels, Banswara, Rajasthan. The property is expected to be operational by April 2024 and shall be managed by Carnation Hotels Private Limited, a wholly owned subsidiary and the management arm of Lemon Tree Hotels Limited. This property will feature 54 well-appointed rooms, a restaurant, banquet spaces and a fitness centre. Hotel Owners turn their attention to their hotel renovations

In many instances, hotel owners can’t ignore the mandate to renovate. Property improvement plans (PIPs) are required across all hotel brands to ensure standardization and consistency. While brands have been lenient with struggling hotels over the last two years, some are starting to be more aggressive in enforcing PIP compliance but may adjust depending on the direction of the economy. Given the spiraling deferred maintenance of the past two years, many guestrooms require replacement of both soft goods and case goods (e.g., furniture), as well as complete bathroom remodels, and technology and systems upgrades. Others are looking at targeted public area projects with direct positive returns on investment.

The Reach at Piccadilly, Manchester to open in 2023

Manchester is set to welcome a new upscale hotel, as The Reach at Piccadilly, Manchester, a Tribute Portfolio Hotel announces plans to open in 2023. Named for its location – at the meeting point of the Rochdale and Ashton Canals – The Reach at Piccadilly forms part of Tribute Portfolio. Speaking of the opening, General Manager Peter Nye said: ‘I am thrilled to announce the opening of The Reach at Piccadilly, Manchester, a Tribute Portfolio Hotel for 2023.’ We have set out to celebrate the pioneering spirit of the past alongside the entrepreneurial spirit of Manchester today, and we cannot wait to welcome our first guests in Spring.

Regenerative Hospitality – a new paradigm

The statement is clear. The tourism industry needs to go one step further to make a significant contribution to building a sustainable future. Yet, many have criticized the current inadequacy of the final objective – respecting the Paris Climate Agreement – and the actual paradigms of the industry, such as unlimited growth and the global distribution of tourism (Becken, 2019). Thus, the call from the UN Secretary-General António Guterres to rethink and reinvent the tourism industry raises concerns about the effectiveness of sustainability to meet that objective.

High levels of Travel Demand may continue in 2023

Following the challenges of the preceding two years, 2022 saw travel resume at record-breaking levels, and hotels worldwide reaped the rewards. Despite rising costs, early market indicators show that pent-up travel demand will likely continue in 2023. Travel is still top of mind for people, particularly across Western Europe and the US. In fact, our most recent market data shows that nights booked from British and US guests are significantly above 2019 levels, and at a much higher price too.

Slow Tourism: Hotels adapting for this new trend

A study conducted by Allison Caffyn in 2012 defined slow tourism as a type of travelling that focuses on the destination’s environment and local community. Slow tourism can be applied across the entire guest stay – prior, during or even after the stay, representing a significant opportunity for hotels to reshape their offering while giving back to the local community. But, can any property take advantage of it?
